Description

1839; altered 1870. 2-storey, 3-bay, Tudor detailed schoolhouse with adjoining primary school (listed separately) to rear. Stugged ashlar and droved margins. Deep base course.

NE ELEVATION: advanced gable to left of centre with bipartite window at each floor, lean-to stone porch in re-entrant angle to right with panelled timber door and 4-pane fanlight to NW, further bipartite window to each floor in bay to right, that to 1st floor breaking eaves into gabled dormerhead.

NW ELEVATION: gabled elevation with bipartite window to each floor.

SE ELEVATION: 2-bay elevation; bay to right with advanced single storey gabled bay with window slapping, and further window to left at 1st floor over lean-to roof of single storey bay.

SW ELEVATION: adjoining school.

INTERIOR: some plain cornicing; stone staircase with plain cast-iron railings; panelled shutters and soffits.

8-pane and plate glass glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows. Graded grey slates. Coped ashlar stacks with battered string course and full complement of polygonal cans, ashlar-coped sawtooth skews with moulded block skewputts.

Statement of Interest

The NSA reported that "The Trustees of the late Earl of Strathmore .... and the other heritors are now about to erect a new parochial school at Glammiss (sic), the present one being found much too small and inconvenient".
