Description

Earlier to mid 19th century. Plain, circular red brick tower (airshaft). Battered advanced circular base. Tall tower above (69 courses) including pulvinated ring at wallhead. Broken blocking courses above. Plain stretcher bond interrupted by header bond at every 5th course. Slightly advanced yellow brick header bond course two-thirds up tower. Yellow brick stretcher course below wallhead.

Statement of Interest

Functional in appearance, this tower is now a landscape feature and serves as an historical marker and vestige of the once large coal mining industry of the area. The nearby Easthouses Pit (now the Easthouses Industrial Estate, 2002) is situated to the SW and the former Mineral Railway ran to Shaw?s Coal Depot to the NW of the shaft. The 1854 map depicts numerous nearby airshafts, however this, which is marked as 'Old Shaft' on the 1854 map, is the last one to remain intact.
