A probably c1835 rebuild of a C17 house. Probably designed by G V Maddox, architect of Monmouth. Church Street had some widening as part of the improvements associated with Priory Street and White Swan Court in c1837, but the north side appears to retain the historic street line. It is not known whether No. 24 is a complete rebuild or if any C17 fabric remains, but a complete rebuild appears fairly likely, and then a further wing was added at the rear.
Painted brick front with recessed centre between giant pilasters, dentil cornice and blocking-course, hipped pantile roofs with two stacks to roughcast right side. Neo-classical style. Narrow 3-storey and attic, single bay building. Good contemporary double shop-front with central entrance, pilasters with fluted volutes to fascia with dentil cornice. Six over 6 pane sash in timber surround to first floor; 3 over 6 pane sash under brick voussoirs to second floor; low horizontal sash window to attic.
Four storey single window cross-gabled rear block with end stacks and small-pane sashes.
Cast-iron column inside ground floor. Interior not available at resurvey, apart from the restaurant premises.
Included for its special interest as an early C19 building in the Monmouth town centre which was probably designed by the leading local architect and has group value with other listed buildings in Church Street as well as St. Mary's Church.
