C19 single-bay two-storey addition to the Checkers Hotel, long-occupied by the butcher's shop run in conjunction with the inn by the Davies family, later by E T Holloway. Old photographs show a small paned shop-window in similar casing, suggesting that the shopfront was altered rather than replaced in earlier C20.The first floor premises above were occupied by the Checkers Hotel.
Shop with accommodation above, painted roughcast with roof of old small slates, continuous with the Checkers Hotel. Red brick right end stack. Two storeys, one bay. The walls said to be of brick under the cladding. Shop front with framework of three thin reeded pilasters, the outer ones under console brackets framing shallow fascia and supporting cornice. Shop-window of two plate glass panes to right of doorway with door of four panels with blocked slats in top, reeded lintel, and overlight. One 16-pane hornless sash window above. Brick left end wall, garden-wall bond. Brick rear with blank upper window.
Stone setts in front.
Ground floor modernised shop.
Included for its special interest as a small C19 shop with good exterior detail, and group value as part of the Checkers Hotel range.
