Gateway and lodge to former barracks of Durham Militia with linking wall. Barracks demolished. Dated 1864. Snecked stone gate and lodge with coped rubble plinth and ashlar dressings; lodge roof of fishscale grey and green slates with stone gable copings and stone chimney; wall snecked stone with ashlar coping. Gateway: Tudor style. 2 square turrets flank wide flat Tudor arch with arms and mottos in high relief under stepped gabled coping with central raised section. Turrets have narrow Tudor open arches below inset panels of arms and insignia, and battlemented parapets. High wall from left turret forms a quadrant extending to the street front of No.1 Dunelm Court. No.1 Dunelm Court of one storey, 3 windows; 2 sashes with glazing bars, and at right a small square light with 4 panes, are in chamfered stone surrounds. Roof has end gable copings on corbelled block kneelers, and square central ridge chimney with plinth and cornice. Right return has coped rubble plinth, 2 sashes and blind cross slit under gable. Inner face towards Dunelm Court green has boarded doors at left and to right of centre, a sash with glazing bars to right of first door, and a 3-light overlight in stone surround over second door. Quadrant wall approx 2.5m high has gabled coping.
