II
Road bridge over River Mill Avon. Dated 1822 on central plaque
each side. Cast-iron and sandstone.
Segmental arch in single span on 5 ribs with openwork
spandrels of linked circles, set to sandstone abutments.
Roadway rises slightly at centre, and contained in simple
railing with small square balusters approx 1.6m high, to
standards with urn finials and central decorative panel
bearing circular plaque inscribed "THIS BRIDGE WAS ERECTED IN
THE YEAR 1822", under a relief modelled urn. Balustrade
carried on heavy cast-iron cambered structural beam above
ribs, and returned at abutments; to W in 3 bays above ramped
coursed stone retaining walls to heavy square sandstone coping
for approx 6m, and to E similar, but abutment extends approx
19m to set of waterside steps. The bridge has asphalted
roadway, and has been extended to S with an extra width on
separate structure.
A typically elegant design which is still heavily used by
traffic to Borough Mills.
