Wall memorial with wide winged angels head beneath broken pediment. -Near this place was buried Penelope the Widow of Henry Smith Esq who died exceedingly lamented 13th Sept 1727 Aged 57. Her extraordinary Success in Physick and her extensive Charity to thousands of poor People make her loss universal to the British Nation. Moriendo vivimus (By dying we live - (through faith in Jesus Christ, is implied by the context))-.(Photo Jul 2014).
The angels on these monuments bear some resemblance to the contemporary Vale of Belvoir Angels headstones. The wings, wide with layers of feathers, and the stark eyes, are shared stylistic elements. In contrast, the Belvoir Angels all have ruffs to their necks and the sculpting of noses is rudimentary. Here, the upper lips are sharply defined and modeled up to the septum. The sensitive Manton sculptor has noticed the rosebud lips and snub nose, sometimes associated with light, curly, hair, that characteristed his rural neighbours in the Vale of Catmose.
