Description

BURFORD AND UPTON PRIORY LANE
AND SIGNET (West end)
SP2512 (Enlargement) Boundary wall and
7/182 gate-piers to The
Priory and The Old
- Rectory.

GV II

Boundary walls and gatepiers. Probably early C20 for E.J. Horniman,
perhaps by W M Godfrey; may well be on line of C17 walls. Coursed and
squared rubble and dry-stone rubble. The wall to the Priory is slightly
bowed in plan and closes the vista up Priory Lane; about 12m high with
coping; tall central gatepiers with cornice and gadrooned ogee capping;
hinge pilasters with scroll-top. The boundary wall to The Old Rectory is
at right-angles, lower and drystone rubble also with coping; 2 ashlar
gate-piers and end pier with simple + capping, oak plank door
with good early C20 strap-hinges.
Important element in the town.
