10/47 Group of 2 headstones approx.
4m SE of chancel of Church of
St. Mary
GV II

2 headstones. c.1694 and c.1700. Marlstone. Baroque style. The earlier stone, to
right has an arched scrolled head with a pair of winged cherub's heads
supporting swags and festoons; the inscription, which is flanked by female
weepers, is now largely illegible but includes the date 1694. The other stone is
slightly larger and has an oval cartouche surrounded by cherubs and drapery, with
a smaller cartouche in the head; the inscription is illegible. The carving,
particularly of the earlier stone, is unusually vigorous and accomplished.
