-22-- A rather mottled slate - blame the lichen. Large, shaped, slate with flowing edge decoration, to: Elizabeth wife of Gervas Howe Jun. d. 6th Oct 1788. -Here lies a Woman good without pretense/ Blest with plain reason and with sober sense/ No conquest she but oer herself defied/ No arts assayd but not to be admird/ Passion and Pride were to her soul unknown/ Convincd that Virtue only is our own/ So unaffected so composd a mind/ So firm yet soft so strong yet so refind/ Heavn as its purest Gold by torture tryd/ The saint sustaind it but the Woman dyd-. Signed Barnes. (Photo Mar 2014).
