1635-5/10001 Navigation House

GV II

House, former Engineer's residence and office. Built for Weaver
Navigation Trust. c1856. Blue engineering brick plinth and
Cheshire common brick walls. Slate roof with two ridge stacks.
Gables have lattice-edged bargeboards. 2 storeys and cellars. 3
bays. W. front has central doorway with 6-panel door and
rectangular overlight. To right a 3-light casement, to left a 2-
light, small-paned casement with cambered brick arch. Above, a
range of 3, 12-light sashes with stone sills and lintels. All
openings except casement to left of door have wedge lintels.
Garden front overlooks R. Weaver and has range of 3 French
windows with margin lights and above, a range of 3, 4-light
sashes with margin lights and narrow centre lights to line up
with French windows below. All have wedge lintels. N.gable has
large stone-framed bay window to office overlooking Navigation
Yard and a moulded 4-panel door with rectangular overlight.
Above, a single 4-light sash. Interior: staircase with stick
balusters, moulded newel posts and rail. 6-panel doors
throughout. Main reception rooms have deep moulded skirtings and
cornices. Main windows retain internal folding shutters. A little
altered Engineer's house with unusual windows, forming a rear and
complete group with its stable block and close relationship to
Yard. The house also has group value with former Weaver
Navigation Office and Clock Tower q.v.
