Row of Almshouses built in 1676 with C19 restoration and additions. [Nos 76 and
78 are C19 reproductions]. Two storeys, 5 and 2 windows. Red brick with some
blue headers in English bond. Tiled roofs with tall chimneys. Casement windows
with C19 chamfered brick surrounds and mullions. Label mouldings over ground floor
windows and doors which have 4-centred heads. C19 paired porches with wood columns
and tiled roofs. Restored inscription:
THE TOLLE HOUSE. Erected in ye Yeare 1676 for the Habitation of decayed
inhabitants of the neighbour borough out of the proffits of the Tolle of the
Markett of the said Borough. By the care and oversight of James Gresham Esq.
