Monument to James Braidwood in Abney Park Cemetery

Monument to James Braidwood (1800-1861). A stone pedestal with coved frieze and wreath-capped terminal erected in memory of the leading fireman of his day, who did much to establish the profession of firefighting. From 1832 the superintendent of the Fire Engine Establishment, he lost his life in the great Tooley Street fire of 22 June 1861, and was buried here on 29 June as a national hero. Listed for historical reasons.
