Large late C19 building. Main west front has central 2-storey gabled bay, with
large wheel window and twin-arched entrance below, flanked by 4-storey towers with
tall mansards. Red brick with dressings of stone and of blue and grey brick.
Slated roofs in varying patterns. Style of neo-Romanesque character with round
headed windows in pairs or rows with impost bands. Foliage capitals to shafts
flanking entrance. Hoodmoulds to all windows. Wide band of tile decoration below
gable coping. Wrought iron finials to all roof angles, and lamp-holders of cast
iron flanking doorway. 2-storey 5-bay left return to Downs Road, leading to north
front of Sunday School section, similar style but with pierced parapet. Sunday
school of 2 storeys with gable end. 5 linked 1st floor windows with ornamental
iron glazing bars; and central entrance.
