- II
Bridge. Circa 1800. Named after John Smeaton (d.1792) engineer and friend of
the Whitbreads, but most likely by Henry Holland (possibly using Smeaton's
structural specifications) as part of his remodelling of Southill Park for
Samuel Whitbread II. Red brick, the arch soffit faced in vitrified brick,
with ashlar dressings. Single span bridge with elliptical arch. Parapets to
both sides have stone piers and coping and plain brick walling, that to S
elevation partly rebuilt. S elevation (over-looking lake) is faced in stone
and has simple decoration of incised panels with round-headed niches to end
piers. Parapet piers also haave incised panel decoration.
