Barn approximately 1.5 metres to north-east of Lower Wat Ing

GV
II
Barn. C17 with earlier origins. Coursed squared stone and rubble brought to course; stone slate roof. Five bays with front aisle. North-east front: brick outshut extension on left (not of interest) masks central recessed cart entry with socketed wood lintel and shallow Tudor-arched doorway to either side into aisles. Left aisle has a chamfered light, right aisle one single and one tripled round-arched vent. Shaped kneelers, coping.

Rear: right bay of rubble. Central chamfered quoined basket-arched doorway with datestone above reading '1663 IMM', possibly reused (as of different stone); chamfered arched vent to left. Right return: chamfered quoined Tudor-arched doorway on left; arched vents; chamfered owl hole in gable.

Interior: five trusses with post braced to arcade plate and tie beams and braces from front wall to tie beams supported on corbels. A queen-strut, a king-post and two open trusses with trenched purlins and old rafters. The two outer tiebeams have mortices for studs, indicating their original use in closing trusses, and the arcade plate also has mortices for studs indicating its original use as a wall plate. These factors and the two sets of carpenter's marks on the trusses indicate that the barn is a rebuilding of a timber-framed barn, which the RCHM report suggests was of at least seven bays and single-aisled.

RCHM(E) Report (31470).
