Description

HAYLE FORE STREET (south side), Hayle
SW 5637-5737
11/85 Nos 55 and 57, (The Copperhouse
Gift Shop)
21.7.1978
II
GV
House, with 2 shopfronts. C18, ground floor converted to shops in the C19.
Stuccoed front. Grouted scantle slate roof with brick chimney over gable end
left-and adjoining party and openway wall, right.
Plan: Double depth plan with 2 wide rooms at the front flanking an entrance
hall. The left hand room has small former shop window in probably original opening, the right-hand room has wide C19 double shopfront and is still in use
as a shop.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Originally probably a symmetrical 3 window front with
central doorway and wide window openings. Now has small circa late C19 or
early C20 transomed window with scroll-headed lights and complete circa late
C19 double shopfront with central doorway on the right. This shopfront has
basket-arched lights with pierced spandrels, glazed door with overlight,
terminal pilasters with consoles and fascia surmounted by a dentilled cornice. Main doorway has C20 door. Over the doorway is an original C18 Venetian style tripartite sash window with original thick glazing bars to the hornless sashes and central round arched head with traceried glazing. The flanking first floor windows are square-headed tripartite sashes, possibly also C18 but with glazing bars removed.
Interior: not inspected.
The C18 Venetian style sash window is the only C18 window of this design yet found in this area (West Cornwall) of the survey.
