Pair of lodges with gates, gatepiers and flanking walls; mid C18, with
c.1770/75 panels and finials. At entrance to former driveway of Ormesby
Hall (q.v.). Sandstone ashlar, painted stone pedestals; slate roofs and
renewed wrought iron gates. Palladian with Adam-style panels and finials:
Central gatepiers, linked to flanking lodges by short walls which have
round-headed pedestrian gateways with archivolts, plain impost bands and
single-leaf gates. Lodges 1½ storeys, single-bay open-pedimented fronts.
Entered from doorways in returns. Each has chamfered rustication below
continuous impost band of round-arched recess holding blocked round-headed
window with voussoirs. Panels ornamented with paterae and husk garlands in
tympana; dentil cornices. Single-storey, single-bay, mock wings adjoin ends
of lodges and have similar recesses. Blocked doorways in inner returns,
with moulded surrounds, that in left lodge missing. Continuous dentilled
eaves cornice. Rear of lodges similar to fronts, with blocked openings
including windows in tympana. Gatepiers have chamfered rustication and
support corniced pedestals without plinths, ornamented with paterae and husk
garlands. Sculptured lion-head finials pierced by spears (Pennyman crest)
now missing (stored at Ormesby Hall). Double-leaf gates have curved rails
and spear-head verticals. Walls flank the mock wings and curve out to the
road, terminating in chamfered-rusticated piers with ogee saucer-domed caps.
Disused and dilapidated at time of resurvey.
