THE COLLEGE
The Chapel of the Infirmary (Deanery)

(formerly listed as part of Residences incorporating remains of Infirmary including Chapel).

23.9.50.

GV
I
The chapel of the Infirmary originally extended by five bays the arcading and aisles of the Infirmary hall and had a two bay chancel at the east end. A C12 arch at the east end of Infirmary Lane marks the entrance to the chapel and part of the chancel arch survives on the west wall of the Deanery, with ornamented arch, nook shaft and shaft rings. On the north side there are four bays of the C12 Chapel arcading with richly ornamented arches and capitals and alternate round and octagonal columns. The chancel is now incorporated within the present Deanery and the upper storey (The Dean's study) retains the C12 ribbed vaulting and arcade of the Chancel. On the north and south sides there are also C12 window arches with nook shafts and scalloped capitals. In the C18 buff coloured brick dwellings were erected on the south and east sides and in the C19 an attic storey was added. On the south front there is a large brick bow with three windows. One window range to the west of the bow and three window range to the east. The return east side of the bow, with one window range, has the stone quoins of an earlier medieval building. The windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars (except in the windows to the bow). Roof tiled, old Cambridgeshire tiles, with a C19 gabled dormer to the bow.

The Dark Cloister, Powcher's Hall, the Painted Chamber (Walsingham House), the Chapel of the Infirmary (Deanery), the Black Hostelry and Cellarers Chamber, and Cellarers House (Boarding House of King's School) form a group. See also general group description under the Cathedral of The Holy Trinity.
