Village hall and caretaker's accommodation, now used as club rooms. 1910
for Countess Cowper of Panshanger (q.v.) in memory of 7th Earl Cowper,
d.1905. Red brick with stone dressings. Tiled roofs. Jacobethan style.
Large hall with lean-to aisle, 2 storey cross range to rear and
caretaker's house to right. Front gable end of hall has a large 3 x 3
stone ovolo moulded mullion and transom window, leaded panes, hood
mould, irregular stone window surround, similar detail to all windows.
Above a carved stone plaque with Cowper arms on a double-headed eagle
with motto 'TUUM EST' and date '1910' on projecting base, foliate
ornament on cornice. At lower level a small 2 light mullioned window.
Double plinth. Irregular stone quoining throughout. Cornice to coped
gable parapet with ridge finial, on flattened ends of gable are
diagonally set ashlar stacks with moulded cornices. Left return: full
height projecting bay window towards rear of hall, 3 x 3 light window,
coped gable with 3 finials. To right a 5 light mullioned window. Towards
front a short gabled projection with a 2 light window, plank door to
front. At rear end of hall a further projecting gabled block with a 2
light window. Cross range to rear projects slightly, outer gable end
has two 6 light mullion and transom windows, ball finials to coped
parapet. Right return of hall has a low brick stone coped wall across
front of cement rendered and timber lean-to entrance passage. Double 8
panelled doors and 4 C20 3 light casements. Extending to right from
rear end of hall is caretaker's accommodation. 4 bays. Ground floor:
entrance to right of centre, glazed and panelled door, cornice to
surround, flanking 2, 4 and 2 light mullioned windows, first floor 1, 2
and 3 light windows. Cross axial stack to left of centre with 3 diagonal
shafts. Right gable end 3 light windows, coped and finialed gable end
parapet. To rear: cross range has 4 light windows on ground floor, one
cross glazed, one mullioned only, first floor 2 lights and a 3 x 2 light
half dormer with a gabled head. Inner gable end internal stack with 4
diagonal shafts. At rear angle of hall and crosswing is a 2 storey
gabled stair wing with a first floor 2 light casement. Triple shafted
stack to rear of caretaker's range with a 1 storey wing. Interior: 5 bay
hall roof has moulded braces in coving to tie beam roof, panelled dado,
arcaded panelling on stair with ball finials to newels, first floor of
cross range has linenfold panelling witha vine scroll frieze carved by
Countess Cowper. (Kelly's Directory 1914).
