GV II

Pair of semi-detached houses, now part of university hall of
residence. Mid C19, late C20 alterations. Coursed squared
stone, ashlar details, slate hipped roof. Back-to-back plan, 2
storeys over basement, with inserted or altered attic storey.
On each facade the ground-floor windows are round-arched with
impost bands linking keyed mouldings; the upper-floor windows
are square-headed with a continuous sill band.
The 3-bay entrance facades have a central porch with keyed
round arch, pilasters supporting console brackets carved with
strapwork and lion masks below deep modillion cornice; 4-panel
doors with fanlight within, round-arched side windows and a
similar larger window to ground floor. A large 3-light
mullioned stair window in architrave with cornice and 2 narrow
6-pane windows in architraves to 1st floor. Modillion cornice
and large moulded stacks to rear of ridge, left and right.
The N (garden and driveway) facade has 2:4:2 first-floor
windows, the outer paired windows in slightly projecting
hipped-roof bays with canted bay windows to ground floor.
S facade: steps with ornate ?cast-iron balustrade to service
entrances in projecting low 2-storey outer bays; large 3-light
mullion windows probably light kitchens. Inserted C20 windows
on S and E sides.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Built as Regent Villas, this is part of the development
possibly designed by John Child, see Devonshire Hall: Old Hall
(qv).
