Lock keeper's cottage. c1790. Probably by Thomas Telford.
Brown brick with graded grey slate hipped roof.
South elevation to canal has flush sandstone plinth; 4 simple
brick pilasters. The ground floor has 2 replaced 16-pane
sashes with stone sills. The first floor has an unequal
12-pane sash to each side of a blocked sash opening. Timber
fascia beneath boldly projecting eaves with exposed joists;
short ridge with central brick chimney. Hip-roofed brick
porch, probably added, west, with 6-pane fixed light in outer
face and replaced part-glazed door to the north. The west side
has a 16-pane ground floor sash and an unequal 12-pane first
floor sash. The east side has a blocked window opening to each
storey. The rear has a C20 wing towards west and a 16-pane
ground floor window towards east; the first floor has a 9-pane
unequal sash, east, a blocked central sash opening and an
unequal 12-pane sash, west.
