Back range of Caroline Gardens, a complex of former almshouses including day centre. 1849-66. By Henry Rose. Stock brick with stucco cornice and plain blocking course. Splayed U-plan range with projecting section at end of south arm; lanes leading through, and houses facing out both ways. EXTERIOR: each house, 2 storeys, 3 bays. Stucco angle pilasters; some slightly projecting sections defined by pilasters. Double doors in plain reveals with oblong overlights. Gauged, cambered brick arches to sash windows with glazing bars. Stucco string course with brick string below above 1st floor. Day centre wing (projecting northwards by 4 bays): north elevation of 2 storeys, 3 main bays, 2 doorways to centre with flanking pilasters supporting entablature; blind arcade of 4 above. Other openings with eared architraves, those to 1st floor blind. Stucco cornice and blocking course continued above this elevation, with acroterion over centre. Street elevation of 2 storeys, 3 bays with stucco architrave, frieze, cornice and pediment on 4 giant Doric pilasters. Stucco architraves to central door and sash windows with glazing bars, those to ground floor with panels below. 1st-floor sill band and low stucco plinth. 3-storey, 1 bay projecting extension to left in later, more ornate style. Stucco angle pilasters with decorative capitals supporting entablature with modillion cornice and pediment. Full height bow window to street; pedimented entrance with keyed oculus above to right. Sill bands to each floor. INTERIOR: not inspected. Nos 111-176 Caroline Gardens form part of a huge complex consisting of double U-shaped ranges around central garden with wide court in between.
