Row of 3 houses and attached railings. c1832-6 with later
additions and alterations. Thomas Williams Oldham of Southam,
builder. Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco to front and
left facades, stucco to right facade, Welsh slate roof and
cast-iron railings.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 6 first-floor windows arranged 2:2:2.
First-floor band with pilaster strips to ends of each house, 6
in all. 6/6 sashes throughout, in plain reveals and with
sills. Continuous eaves band, cornice, embattled parapet to
Nos 51 & 53.
Ground floor, entrances arranged to right of Nos 51 & 55 and
to left of No.53: 2 roll-edged steps to part-glazed doors with
overlights. Joint tristyle Tuscan porch to Nos 51 and 53, and
distyle Tuscan porch to No.55 all with engaged pilasters,
frieze, cornice, embattled to No.55 otherwise with low
parapet. Canted bay windows, that to right has centre a 6/6
sash between 2/2 sashes, otherwise 1/1 sashes.
To rear of No.55 are six 6/6 sashes.
INTERIOR to No.55: staircase has stick balusters and wreathed
handrail. Shutters to some windows. Some marble and cast-iron
chimneypieces.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: boundary railings between Nos 51 and 53
have pairs of bars with paterae between.
HISTORICAL NOTE: deeds dated 30 and 31 December 1833 to No.55
indicate that the land was sold by Edward Willes of Newbold
Comyn with a covenant permitting only 'Villas or
Dwellinghouses of the value of »600 each with cemented or
stuccoed fronts'. Leam Terrace was laid out c1828-1836, both
sides as far as Willes Road were almost completely built by
1841.
Forms an architectural group with No.49 (qv).
