Royal Oak Hotel

GV II

Public house. Probably mid to later C18, with early extension
to left; enlarged and altered. Painted scored stucco, probably
on brick, with painted sandstone plinth and dressings, slate
roof and brick chimneys. Rectangular double-depth plan, plus
various C20 back extensions. 3 storeys and 5 windows (grouped
1:2:2), symmetrical except for the 1st bay; with moulded
plinth to right of doorway and chamfered plinth to left;
rusticated quoins to right-hand corner and cement quoining to
left corner. The doorway, between the 2 pairs of windows, has
a doorcase with Tuscan semi-columns carrying a C20 wooden
pediment with modillions. All the windows are 12-pane sashes,
those at 2nd floor shorter and square-paned, and all have
raised sills and unusual divided triple keystones (one in the
centre and one at each corner). Large ridge chimney offset
left (at junction with 1st bay), gable chimney to right.
Rear and INTERIOR altered.
