Includes: No.4 JENNER WALK. Terraced house and attached area railings. c1805-20. Stucco over brick with concealed roof, stucco party-wall stack at left and renewed stack at right; wrought-iron balconies, porch and area railings. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys on basement, 2 first-floor windows. 6/6 sashes where original, in plain reveals and with sills. Entrance to left, steps to 6-fielded-panel door has fanlight with Gothic glazing. Low parapet and copings. Rear has 6/6 sashes. INTERIOR: has dogleg staircase with stick balusters and wreathed handrail; 6-panel doors; simple cornices. 2 marble fireplaces. Panelled shutters. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: porch has delicate scroll motif with Gothic arcading; elliptical first-floor balcony at right with rod and central circle motif; this motif is found on several balconies in St George's Place. HISTORICAL NOTE: building along St George's Place commenced in 1805; originally known as Stills Lane, it was the only road connecting the High Street with the Royal Well Spa before the Promenade. Nos 27 (qv), 31 and 33 (qv) St George's Place occupy a short spur leading to Cheltenham Chapel, St George's Square (qv); this stretch is now also known as Jenner Walk, in memory of the Spa town's famous Dr Jenner, who lived at No.22 St George's Place, since demolished.
