Estate workers cottage and walled yard.
Cottage: mid C18 altered C19.
MATERIALS: red brick in Flemish bond, old tile hipped roof.
PLAN: long rectangular plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with corbelled heads and clay pots near
ridge, to right of centre. Dentilled brick eaves. C19 casement
windows with glazing bars, those on ground floor have
segmental brick arched heads. Entrance front, north, irregular
four 2-light and 1 single-light windows on first floor, three
2-light windows ground floor at right end with half glazed
entrance door, moulded architrave, doorcase and bracketed hood
with moulded cornice. Door to right of first window. To left
pair of wooden plank doors with segmental arched head. At left
end single wooden plank door.
Enclosing walls to yard are C18 in Flemish bond. Wall in west
approximately 2 metres high with dentilled eaves and
projecting brick coping and adjoins cottage on north-west
corner. Northern end of wall is wide entrance with segmental
arched head and keystone. Adjoining this on north and forming
feature rising above wall is small square agricultural
building with platband, keyed oculus opening, dentilled eaves
and old tile hipped roof. Wooden plank entrance door on east
side. East yard enclosed by C18 walls approximately 3 metres
high with opening in west wall to West yard. Wall on south
includes gateway and included separately with the East walled
garden, gateways and aviary (qv).
The Bothy Cottage, west and east yards, together with
Greenhouse Garden and former cattleshed and yard, East walled
garden, gateways and aviary (qqv) are all parts of the Kitchen
gardens to Ascot Place.
