DESCRIPTION: Hutton Roof War Memorial is located in the churchyard of St John’s Church, Hutton Roof, Cumbria. It is prominently situated near the churchyard wall in the south-east corner of the churchyard and visible from the main road passing by. It comprises a c.1.8-metre-high rough, natural monolith of limestone, unworked but for a relief-carved plain cross to the front and a smoothed inscription face below. The inscription panel bears the dedication and names in incised and blacked lettering.
The inscription is in incised and blacked lettering and reads: ERECTED BY THE/ PARISHIONERS OF/ HUTTON ROOF/ IN MEMORY OF/ (NAMES)/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR/ THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN/ THE CAUSE OF JUSTICE AND RIGHT/ “THEY SHALL RISE AGAIN”/ 1914 – 1918.
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss. One such memorial was raised at Hutton Roof as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War.
Hutton Roof War Memorial was situated within the churchyard. The memorial commemorates four local servicemen who fell in the First World War. It was made by a local mason, Richard Fishwick, and was dedicated sometime near to 20 November 1920.
