Description

Earlier 19th century. Single storey with attic, U-plan stables. Whinstone; sandstone ashlar dressings.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: square-plan gatepiers to courtyard entrance; gabled bays to outer left and right; windows at ground and attic to left, to ground only to right; 2 grille openings to left.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: near central timber stable door with window to left; 5 square grille openings to right; 4 square grille openings to left, with loading bay above; single windows at ground and attic to outer left. Both attic windows break eaves to form gables. Later harled gabled addition to outer right.

COURTYARD, S ELEVATION: advanced gabled porch; segmental arch opening at ground; loading bay to gable; single windows flanking; timber door to outer right.

W ELEVATION: advanced M-gabled bay to outer left; small timber window; timber stable door; 2 square grilles. Timber door to re entrant angle. Timber door to right of recessed section; small window to outer right; 2 single windows to left; single window aligned above at attic.

E ELEVATION: 2 single windows right of centre; flanking timber doors; 2 pairs of windows to M-gable at attic; timber door and small window at ground to outer left. 2-leaf boarded timber doors at re entrant angle. Single window and 2-leaf boarded timber doors to advanced M-gabled bay to outer right.

8- and 12-pane timber sash and case windows; rooflights. Grey slate roof; stone skews; skewputts; ridge, gable and wallhead stacks; circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: timber stalls with curved iron-work; ball finials to posts.

Statement of Interest

Possibly part of the William Burn design for Dunskey Estate of the earlier 19th century. An impressive stable block with much of its original detailing intact - the square-plan stacks; ball finialed gatepiers and iron grilles, are particularly worthy of note. Other listings on the Dunskey Estate are Dunskey House, Home Farm, walled garden and greenhouses, Kennels House and kennels, gatepiers, gates and boundary walls to North and South Lodges and within estate, South Lodge, and the cablehouse.
