Description

David Rhind, 1863, with later additions to N. 3-storey, 3-bay Italian Renaissance former bank on corner site. Coursed, stugged, squared sandstone; ashlar dressings. Base course; 1st and 2nd floor cill courses; dentilled and mutuled cornice; balustraded parapet with dies (dies only to NE elevation). Original windows round-arched; aprons and cornices at ground floor; pilastered, sculpted-head keystones at 1st floor windows (additional aprons to NE elevation); keyblocks and rosette spandrels to lugged architraved windows at 2nd floor.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: pilastered doorpiece to outer right; round-arched entrance within; glazed timber door; fanlight; regular fenestration to remaining bays.

NE (ST JOHN STREET) ELEVATION: 4-bay, with later single bay extension to outer right. Consoled cornice to round-arched, keystoned doorpiece to right; timber door; regular fenestration to remaining bays. Single windows at ground and 1st floor to lower, single bay extension to outer right.

Plate glass timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; wallhead stacks; circular cans.

INTERIOR: dentilled cornice remains to ground floor shop.

Statement of Interest

Former Commercial Bank. A good classical example of Ayr's banking history, notable for its fine detailing, especially the sculpted-head keystones (typical of David Rhind) and combination dentilled/mutuled cornice. Rhind executed much work for the Commercial Bank, including branches in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth, Linlithgow, Fife, Girvan and Stirling.
