Description

James MacLaren, circa 1850. 2-storey and basement, basically rectangular plan with single storey projections at rear, 3-bay, Jacobean style villa. Ashlar with rubble masonry at rear, margined angles, slate roof. Base course, cill course at 1st floor, skew gables with corbelled skewputts, mainly 12-lying-pane sash and case windows with chamfered reveals, tall polygonal stacks with decorative cans grouped on moulded base, corbelled at gablehead to W.

W ELEVATION: 2-bay; entrance porch to left with piers and parapet, door blocked as window, modern extension at right masking bipartite window with hoodmould. 2 symmetrically placed windows at 1st floor with hoodmoulds.

S ELEVATION: 3-bay. Window at ground and 1st floor to centre; slightly advanced gable at left, projecting bipartite window at ground floor with 4-pane sash and case glazing, parapet carrying hoodmould forward, window at 1st floor with gabled hoodmould, blank shield panel at gable. Narrower gable advanced at outer right; canted window at ground floor with parapet, window at 1st floor with hoodmould as above.

E ELEVATION: windows at ground and 1st floor right. Chimneybreast at centre, door with painted margins, off-set window at 1st floor.

N ELEVATION: stair window converted to door at 1st floor with forestair between single storey gabled projection in outer bays; 2 asymmetrically placed wallhead stacks.

WALLS AND GATEPIERS: terrace wall at N. Enclosing walls at E and W, ashlar gatepiers with moulded pyramidal urn finials at Hermitage Road.

Statement of Interest

Entrance porch and projection windows at S elevation possibly early additions; house sub-divided into 3. Small rustic summerhouse in garden. The stacks are an important element in this building.
