Description

John Murray Robertson, 1898. 2-storey and attic, irregular-plan villa. Red brick, red tile roof. Mostly 10-pane sash and case windows, some multi-pane casements; cill course at 1st floor; trellis work attached at 1st floor S and W; exposed rafter ends at eaves, some plain bargeboards; some swept dormerheads; piended-roof, ribbed and coped stacks.

W ELEVATION: gabled portch at left with 2-leaf door flanked by windows, single window at 1st floor; multi-pane bow window at right, bipartite at 1st floor breaking eaves; horizontal window at far right ground floor; projecting diagonal gable at outer right, 4-light window at ground floor with bipartites at return, tripartite at 1st floor with single windows at returns.

S ELEVATION: symmetrical 3-bay recessed section, verandah at ground floor with turned timber columns, projecting window at 1st floor ganked by single window all projecting through eaves, two 4-light gabled dormers; projecting diagonal gable at left as above; projecting gable at right, tripartite window at ground floor with door and window at returns; recessed bay at outer right with modrn out of character sliding doors at left, window at right, bipartite at 1st floor breaking eaves.

E ELEVATION: window and flat-roof projection at ground floor, 2 single and 2 bipartite windows at 1st.

N ELEVATION: piended roof bay at left swept down at right; lower lean-to at fra right; various doors and windows.

INTERIOR: sub-divided into a number of units with some loss of original features.

WALL AND GATEPIERS: coped rubble wall and gatepiers at Strathearn Road.

Statement of Interest

The croft was built for H B Gilroy in an English Arts and Crafts/American shingle-style manner; a much pared down interpretation when compared with the same architect's the Bughties, 76 Camphill Road, Broughty Ferry (1882, listed separately).
