Description

Circa 1775; refaced and shop added by Peddie & Kinnear, 1876. 3-storey and attic, 3-bay offices with shop built out at ground. Painted droved sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Shopfront with consoled cornice and pierced parapet incorporating door to upper floors to left, modernised shop to right. Upper floor windows architraved and grouped together; at 1st floor centre window pilastered, with consoled pediment, and all united with fluted frieze and cornice. Modillioned cornice and lead covered blocking course. Bowed piend-roofed dormer to right.

Timber sash and case 4-pane windows. Ashlar coped skews; stone stacks, rendered to E; grey slates.

INTERIOR: thoroughly modernised at ground.

Statement of Interest

A Group with Nos 30-60 (even nos) George Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh's New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
