Description

Bridge, said to date from circa 1800 (though it may in fact be a little later); built to carry main traffic over River Kelvin at Partick until its cast-iron successor was opened in 1878. Roadway (which is flat) widened to south, retaining profile; built mainly of droved ashlar, polished dressings, with pilaster strips, pointed cutwaters. Densely - clad in vegetation (1990). Symmetrical profile, 3 arches, the centre the widest, but on east bank a 4th arch over lade of former Burnhouse (latterly Regent) Mills, altered and with cast-iron ribs, roadway skewed at north over box girder.

Parapets are plain iron railings, late 19th century in appearance; gates opening over centre arch on south side are a puzzle.

Part of Kelvingrove Park West B group, comprising 10 Dumbarton Road, Partick Bridge over River Kelvin, Partick Sewage Pumping Station, Anderson's College, 2-4 Dumbarton Road Sunlight Cottages, University Main Block, Art Gallery and Museum and The Cameronians Monument.
