Description

Institute built 1892-8 to designs by A Lindsay Miller; extended 1906 and 1910 (Williamson, et al) and later. Windows mostly mullioned and/or transomed. 2 storeys; snecked ashlar; glazing mostly large-paned sash and case; slate roofs.

Principal feature is an engaged 3-storey tower at north east corner, its upper part decorated with complex series of vertical shafts and horizontal strings (of mid 16th century Scots type), characteristic of Miller's work high, domed roof. Range adjoining has long front to Hamilton Drive with 2-storey projecting window, outer gables; entrance is to Greenlees Road. Slightly lower long wing adjoining to left is not original, but may also be by Miller; to rear of the latter is the MAIN HALL, a long rectangular-plan range (possibly phase two of the Institute's building history) with stepped giant 3-light window in south gable, aedicule above in style of Miller. Low boundary wall to street.
