Description

1792. 2-storey, 5-bay, classical tenement on curved corner site, asymmetrical plan building. Sandstone, ashlar front, squared and snecked to side and rear, base course, cill band course, eaves cornice and blocking course, tall windows, chamfered margins.

SW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION : central, pilastered doorpiece with deep entablature, modern shop door, window centred at 1st floor above, 2 bays flanking symmetrical with window at ground and 1st floors, outer bay to right with door at ground floor.

S ELEVATION : narrow end of block, window at ground and 1st floors off-set to left.

E ELEVATION: window at ground and 1st floors off-set to left,

No5 George St abutting to NE.

N ELEVATION : adjoining 153 High St.

Modern plate glass and timber panel glazing, grey slate, ashlar ridge stack to S, brick stack to N.

INTERIOR : deep geometrical pattern plaster ceiling mouldings and floreate cornice at ground floor. Apartments at 1st floor.

Statement of Interest

No 1 originally a Bank, at some stage possibly run as the Fargo Bank - lettering just visible upon entablature. Dating courtesy of owner. No 5 George St built against and around NE corner, the profile of the external wall of No 1 being evident inside No 5.
