Description

Possibly late 18th century in part with later additions. Symmetrical 2-storey, 3-bay, originally rectangular-plan house forming end of terrace, with jerkin-headed porch to front; various single storey additions at rear. Sandstone rubble to front; tooled and painted sandstone dressings; rendered to side and rear; whitewashed porch. Eaves course; rusticated quoins; long and short surrounds to openings; projecting cills.

NE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: timber panelled door and flanking side-lights in single storey porch projecting at centre. Single windows at ground in bays recessed to outer left and right. Single windows in all bays at 1st floor.

SE (SIDE) ELEVATION: original 2-bay block to right with single windows in both bays at ground. Various single storey additions to left.

SW (REAR) ELEVATION: projecting single storey additions obscuring bays at ground. Single windows at 1st floor; canted dormers in bays to outer left and right.

Predominantly 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; tiled ridging; stone-coped skews. Brick-built apex stack to SE; mutual (?) sandstone ridge stack to NW; various circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

BOUNDARY WALLS: low coped sandstone wall enclosing site to front. Rubble-coped, rubble wall enclosing site at rear.

Statement of Interest

A relatively early, fundamentally intact house fronting Ayton's High Street.
