History

Early C17 gatehouse, contemporary with the main range at Glyn Cywarch for which it was built. Originally with low flanking wings, the rooflines of which were raised during the estate improvements of the 1870s.

Exterior

C17 gatehouse. 3 storeys with attics to central section, with lower flanking stable and cartshed wings. Built of mortared rubble masonry with large stones as quoins and lintels and sandstone dressings. Slate cruciform roof with stone copings and tall square stacks with dripstone and cappings to L (SW) and R (NE) gables; wings have corbelled eaves. The principal elevation faces the yard to SE, the rear elevation faces the house to NW. The main entrance is offset to L (SW) with riven stone voussoir-arched head with plain hoodmould; mullioned window of 2 lights to R. The upper storeys have mullioned windows of 3-lights with hoodmoulds, the height diminishing at each storey.
To L (SW) is the stable wing, the central doorway has a 4-centred arched head and is flanked by mullioned windows of 3-lights; there is a further window of 2-lights at a higher level to far R. Above the entrance is a mullioned window of 4-lights set in a gabled dormer that breaks the eaves line. There is a plain label over and advanced copings that form a pediment surmounted by a raised ball finial and houses a datestone in the tympanum that bears the initials and date: J.R.O.G. M.P. / 1871.
The cartshed (garage) wing has two wide cartshed bays with mullioned 1st floor windows of 3-lights above. To centre there is a similar gabled dormer to the stable range, housing a mullioned window of 3-lights and with a datestone that bears the date: 1877.

Interior

Modernised late C19 and early C20.
