Wall monument –Here is buried Simon Digby Esquier Gent. Pensioner of King Henry the eight. Second sonne of Sir Jhon Digby Knight Marshall which Simon married Katherine daughter of Christopher Clapham of Beamesley in Yorksher, esquire. Here is also buried Roger Digby Esquier their sonne and heyre who married (Mary) daughter of Jhon Cheyne of Shardelows in Buckinghamsher Esquire-. There follows a poem in Latin, in substance –Man is born to long suffering in a short uncertain life. In Christ, truth and certainty are found in life and death. (Maria Nerendon), Bride and Wife, to Roger Digby, Knight Marshall, places this monument, 1582-. Her name has been defaced, presumably by a follower of the Digbys, perhaps to show outrage at her remarrying. Followers of great houses were expected to show their loyalty by such acts of vengence against perceived slights. The shields above are; Azure a fleur de lys argent for Digby, impaling Argent, on a bend sable six fleurs de lys or, 2, 2, and 2 for Clapham. Then Digby again; impaling Checquy or and azure, a fesse gules fretted ermine for Cheyne. The shields are naked of paint but I present them as reported in the Gentlemens Magazine of June 1862.
