Description

HELSTON

SW6527 WENDRON STREET
631-1/5/244 (South East side)
18/01/94 Former Baptist Church

GV II

Non-conformist chapel, now commercial premises. 1836. By
Philip Sambell. Elvan ashlar with granite dressings to visible
coped front gable; ground floor obscured by C20 extension;
roof not visible. Rectangular aisleless plan. Norman Revival
style. 2 storeys; symmetrical 5-bay 3-window 1st-floor range.
2-light casements with 2-pane fanlights and alternate blind
ashlar openings within ordered arches with engaged columns and
window aprons with arcade of 5 round arches; impost string and
string to bottom of 3-bay gable with central bay with central
deeply recessed rose windows with roll-moulded architrave
under stepped gable with pseudo machicolation and central
octagonal finial; flanking recessed panels with nook-shafts.
INTERIOR not accessible at time of survey. Although partly
obscured, the visible robust architecture of this building
makes a strong contribution to the character of this street.
It is a striking example of non-conformist chapel architecture
of the period, similar in design to the chapel at Clarence
Street, Penzance, also by Sambell, a noteworthy Cornish
architect whose work includes the Lander column and other
commissions in Truro.

1600-1840: London: 1978-: 711).
