House with shop premises. Late C15, altered early C19 and restored.
Exposed timber frame with plastered infill, hipped stone slate roof,
partly stone-clad South return. Double jettied, 1st floor jetty
underbuilt. 3 storeys on vaulted undercroft; jettied 2nd floor with
underbuilt oriel bay to 1st floor. On 2nd floor a pair of mid-C19 wide-
pane sashes set in timber-frame outer bays which have blind Tudor-arched
openings (and one in North return); on 1st floor a rectangular eriel bay
with early to mid-C19 glazing bar sashes with flanking 2-light
cinquefoiled blocked windows. Slated lean-to to boxed out shop front on
ashlar plinth, latter has an opening to undercroft. Cobbled forecourt.
L-plan to rear with cross-wing to East. According to BOE there is a
pargetted panel in the rear wing dated "A.H.1710"; plastered timber-frame
on heavily moulded plinth, wide chamfered eaves overhang, 4-light window
to ground floor right with paired glazing bar sashes and outer mediaeval
lights. Interior: famous and excellent L-plan (4:2 bay) vaulted under-
croft with Tudor arched quardipartite chamfered ribs, octagonal pier to 4
bay front part, 2 openings to West (one to shop and one to street), stairs
in angle reached from 2-bay part, aumbries in most bays. High ground
floor, archway to rear now impeded by stair turret, early C18 dog-leg
stairs. Excellent fireplace on lst floor, moulded flat-headed surround
with 7 quatrefoils in frieze. Rear wing has early C18 panelling, complete
ground floor and including a corner fire-place, extensive on 1st floor,
hipped roof reusing earlier timber, including one side of a raised cruck.
Front roof structure: 2 bays, 2 purlins with 2 rows of wind-braces; L-wing
roof structure: some evidence of smoke blackening.
