(Formerly Listed as:
HEADINGLEY LANE, Headingley
(North East side)
Entrance lodge south of Mount St
Joseph's College of the Blessed
Virgin)

GV II

Lodge house and entrance gateway. c1846. For Thomas England.
Comprises lodge of coursed squared stone with slate roof;
inner and outer pairs of monolithic gritstone gate piers;
wrought-iron railings; flanking walls of 2 builds, coursed
squared gritstone and ashlar.
Lodge: 2 storeys, 3 canted bays, Tudor style. Central porch,
originally open, late C20 infill, flanking Tudor arched
2-light windows with hoodmoulds; three 2-light mullioned
windows with hoodmoulds to 1st floor, moulded 1st-floor string
course, steeply pitched gable; 2 ridge stacks with 2 and 3
circular flues.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Gate piers: octagonal, approx 2m high, moulded plinths and
pointed capstones. Railings on low moulded plinth wall between
left inner and outer piers: plain pointed finials. Flanking
walls: each approx 5m long, 2m high, moulded coping.
In the same style as Headingley Castle (qv), this lodge stood
at the end of a long drive which served both that house and
Highfields (demolished) when the 1850 OS map was surveyed. The
drive to the Wesley College, now Mount St Joseph's (qv) was
built c1867, probably the date for the gate piers; a new lodge
to Headingley Castle was built at that time, now No.70
Headingley Lane (qv).
(Ordnance Survey Map of Leeds: 1850-).
