Garden wall, gate piers and steps to
Virginia House
GV II
Boundary wall, gate piers and steps. Early C19, possible later
C19 alterations. Walls of coursed squared gritstone and
ashlar, with rounded stone copings, gate piers of softer
sandstone, stone steps. Encloses the gardens of Virginia House
on the W and S sides (North Grange Road and Headingley Lane);
the entrance gates having steps with flanking walls leading
towards the house.
Walling: overall length approx 100m, the northern end approx
5m high, ramped down twice; beyond the gate piers the lower
section is approx 2m high, the stone changing from squared
rubble to ashlar at the corner with Headingley Lane.
Gate piers square in section, moulded plinth, recessed panels
with carved flower in roundel, moulded cornice and
entablature, gabled capstone. Flight of 7 steps with ashlar
flanking walls and square-section terminals with moulded
capstones.
