Large house, now offices of Social Services Department. c1840
with later C19 additions. Coursed squared and hammer-dressed
gritstone and ashlar, slate roof.
Main 2-storey house of 3 x 5 windows with single-storey wings
added to N side forming a U-plan. Entrance front, W side:
central entrance has modern glazed double doors with margin
lights, deep console brackets and cornice above; single-storey
porch with Ionic columns in antis, entablature and cornice
with blocking course. Large sashes with glazing bars,
first-floor and sill bands, corner pilasters, entablature,
cornice and blocking course. Tall ashlar stacks flank centre
bay. Single-storey 4-bay wing to left has plate-glass sashes,
pilasters to moulded entablature, cornice and moulded blocking
course. Right return: central 3-window bay breaks forward
slightly and is pedimented.
INTERIOR: Classical moulded plasterwork to lobby with
egg-and-dart and acanthus motifs, square columns in antis,
fine top-lit staircase hall, cantilevered 2-flight stairs with
scroll and acanthus pattern to balustrade.
