Description

MIDDLESBROUGH MARKET PLACE. NZ 42 SE (4921) 1/53 Clock tower, c. 5m south-west of Old Town Hall. G.V. II Clock tower, 1846 by W.L. Moffatt (Doncaster). Brick with stone dressings, now rendered. Metal roof. Italianate. 4-stage tower, the lowest stage concealed by mid C20 clinic. Moulded cornices between stages; clasping pilaster strips, those on 2nd and 3rd stages vermiculate rusticated. 2nd stage has blind round-headed windows with moulded imposts and keyed archivolts. 3rd stage has blocked round-headed windows, painted to imitate sashes, with pilasters, keyed archivolts and impost strings. Top stage has clock faces and volutes at angles. Shallow-gabled dormers, with ball-and-spike finials, hold latticed bell openings. Trumpet-shaped roof with weather vane and compass finial. One-storey clinic is not of special interest. Included for group value.
