Two semi-detached houses. c1860 with later additions and
alterations. Brick with stone and stucco detailing under
hipped slated roof, party wall stack with oversailing detail
and pots. Double-fronted, double-depth plan. Originally single
dwelling or purpose designed to look like one house with
central entrance (shown as 2 dwellings on 1886 O.S. map);
access to No. 2 is via narrow, single-window range set back to
left return. Service ranges to rear. 3 storeys. 3 first-floor
windows. 2/2 sashes to second-floor, otherwise mainly 1/1;
rectangular bay window with hipped lead roof and tripartite
sashes to left and right ground-floor all in plain reveals
with sills. Stucco/stone detailing includes moulded plinth,
bay window and door surrounds, moulded string course below
first-floor windows which have eared and shouldered surrounds,
sill band to second-floor windows which have eared surrounds
and brackets to sills; eaves cornice with narrow string course
below. Tuscan style pilaster door case to No 1 with console
brackets and moulded canopy; 3 stone steps to 6-panel door,
all raised and fielded with bolection moulding; plain
overlight. Similar door and overlight to No. 2 but with
moulded surround and no canopy; 3 stone steps.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Although later than the principal group of houses around St.
George's Square, this building is a classical composition
which forms an important part of the group.
