Description

LYNCOMBE HILL
(East side)

Entrance gates
and piers to
Lyncombe Hill
Burial Ground

GV II

Gatepiers and gates. C1819.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar and wrought iron.
EXTERIOR: Rusticated ashlar piers with pyramid caps. Double gates with swept top, spear heads and dog bars also with spear heads.
HISTORY: These gates formerly secured the Unitarian Burial Ground. According to Peach, `this exquisitely beautiful spot, in the lovely glen of Lyncombe, was presented to his brethren by the late Mr Howse, as a burial ground, in the year 1819. Here is a convenient chapel, around which many interments have taken place'. The ground has been built over since. [REM Peach, `Bath Old and New' (1891), 186].
