Summary

Headstone dated about 1894.

Description

Headstone. c1894. Carved stone. The headstone has slightly narrowed sides with carved foliage at the top leading to a band decorated with rosettes with the pointed arch top framing a relief carving of a sailing boat.

The inscription records James Davies, 1826-1893, and his wife, Ann, d.1907. James Davies was the coxswain of the Cromer lifeboat and it is possible that the relief portrays it.

A fine headstone to the coxswain of a sailed and rowed lifeboat which is probably portrayed in a relief carving. Forms a group with the listed chapel and three other listed headstones in Cromer cemetery.

History

The land for Cromer Cemetery was donated by B B Cabell of Cromer Hall in 1860. There was originally a private path between the cemetery and the hall. A quarter of the cemetery was reserved for dissenters, the rest was consecrated for Anglicans. The cemetery closed to burials in 1908.
