Pair of town houses. Probably c.1820-30; altered.
Red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and slate
roof. Double-depth plan on corner site, with main axis
parallel to West Beach and gabled entrance front to Beach
Street.
2 storeys and 4 windows to Beach Street, with a 1st-floor
sillband, frieze and cornice carried round, and the gable
treated as a pediment to the first 3 bays, which form a
symmetrical composition with a central round-headed doorway
which has a stepped brick surround and set-in wooden doorcase
of engaged columns with mutuled and patterned lintel enriched
with geometrical patterns, and a fanlight with radiating
glazing bars; 2 sashed windows without glazing bars at ground
floor and 3 above, plus a 4th in a short continuation to the
right above a segmental-headed archway.
The facade to West Beach is formed by the 2-window returned
side of this house and the 3-window facade of No.11 Beach
Street, with a 1st-floor sillband, plain frieze and moulded
cornice carried across; a central doorway to No.11 West Beach
formerly matching that of No.1 Beach Street, but now with a
rendered surround and altered fanlight; three large tripartite
sashed windows at ground floor set in segmental-headed blank
arches; and 4-pane sashes at 1st floor.
Forms a group with Nos 2, 3 and 4 Beach Street adjoining
(q.v.).
