On the north wall of the chancel, a monumental tablet. -Near this Table lies deposited The Body of that honest and good man, Joseph Milner M.A. Rector of this Parish, Official of this Arch-Deaconry, And Son of ye Revd & worthy Mr William Milner, Rector of Shephall in Hertfordshire. Having gone thro his Academical Studies With credit and applause, at St Catherine-Hall in Cambridge, he dedicated his Soul to God, and his Righteousness and served him in Spirit and in truth. Thirty years he fed his Flock of Barton, His only Flock, with faithfulness and tenderness, At the same time shewing the Shepherd lovd his Sheep, And teaching the Sheep to love the Shepherd. Tho late he entred on his Judicial Charge, Yet blessd with a sound and penetrating Mind, He became well the important Post, And in the opinion of every wife and good man, Presided with Ability and Dignity. But in no part of his Life was he more usefully distinguishd Than in the generous offices of private Friendship. His prudent Advice and Affectionate Address Directed by a candid and open Simplicity of Heart In most Cases happily prevailed. Deprived of such a Partner, and Oh How soon deprivd! His tenderly and justly beloved Wife Elizabeth Daughter of the Revd Mr John Woods, Rector of Wilford and Cortlingstock, As a Monument of his Worth, and a Pledge of her Affection, This Marble Table caused to be erected, First bathing it with a Flood of Tears. He was born Octr 7th 1695 and died Jany 27th 1750/1. Also near this Place lieth the Remains of Elizabeth Milner, Relict of the above Joseph Milner MA. She departed this Life 19th Jun 1779 aged 65 Years. (Photo Oct 2014).
